If I didn't have another program to do the same thing. "Tag and Rename" this might have to do.

The biggest problem with Toe Tag is you must specify the directory you want to work in and Toe Tag will only work in that directory.

It needs the ability to pick a directory and work in the sub directories to gain serious consideration.

I have an MP3 directory, each genre is in a sub directory of MP3, each artist is in a subdirectory of Genre and so forth.

I've bookmarked the page, and will check back

ToeTag has been able to work with subdirectories since version 0.4.0. If you are using an older version, please upgrade. If you are working with the latest version, it defaults to not read subdirectories. Pressing the 5th icon on the toolbar from the left (the one of a folder which I tried to draw subdirectories on) will enable parsing subdirectories.

I used the subdirectory parsing feature, and when it finished renaming the files, not only were many of my files given unrecognizable names like "00 -", but some of them that originally had all the tag info crammed into the filename were completely untouched. And to top it all off, all of the files were dumped into my music root directory. 3000+ mp3s that were once neatly sorted by artist, now a jumbled mess. Nice.

If the ID3 tag fields are not filled out, that's what will happen. The rename doesn't use the data present in the filename, it uses the data in the ID3 tags.

I'm sorry this advice is much too late to help, but you needed to first use the filename->tag feature to extract that data and write it to the appropriate fields, then use the tag->filename feature to move them into the directories where they belong.

I'm sorry if the instructions were unclear, but I believe almost any tagging software would have behaved similarly. Perhaps I can put in a feature to warn the user if fields are blank before renaming. Undo/redo is on my list of things to do, but again it is too late to help you.
